Respiratory Syncytial Virus – RSV- What You Should Know

Given the prevalence of Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) in the news, many people, especially parents, have questions about this virus. Angela L. Roberts, MD, Family Medicine Physician with Steward Medical Group, provides a clinical overview of RSV and symptoms to look for, as well as ways to help prevent the spread of it.

Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) is a common respiratory virus that can cause cold-like symptoms.  Most people recover from their upper respiratory symptoms in a week or so.  However, RSV can cause bronchiolitis and pneumonia in infants.

RSV can affect any age group but can be very serious in infants and older adults who are immunocompromised. RSV is very contagious. It can spread through droplets released in the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes.  It can also spread by direct contact.

Symptoms of RSV include runny nose, cough, fever, and difficulty breathing or wheezing.

Most people who get RSV will have a mild illness and will recover on their own.  Some may develop a more severe infection requiring hospitalization.  Infants can develop bronchiolitis or pneumonia from RSV.

If a parent or caregiver suspect their child may have RSV, they can contact their health care provider for testing.  They can also provide acetaminophen or ibuprofen for fever and maintain adequate hydration at home. There is no specific treatment for RSV infection.  Symptoms from most RSV infections will last for 5-7 days, with complete recovery in 1-2 weeks.

Prevention of RSV starts with avoiding close contact with people who are sick.  Other preventative measures include: Always wash hands with soap and water, do not share cups and utensils, and clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces.
