My name is Jose F. Moreno 1st LT NC USAR (Retired 2012).
My military career began in February 1978 and I retired in January 2012. During my career I served in four branches of the US Armed Forces. As a member of the US Navy, served with active and reserve units as a Hospital Corpsman assigned to Naval and Marine Corps Units. As a member of the Texas Army National Guard and Army Reserves served as a Combat Medic and retired as an Army Nurse. As a member of the Air Force served as an Aircrew Member on Combat Air Medical Evacuation Teams. My military history follows:
Navy Active February 1978- May 1984 Served as Hospital Corpsman with Navy and Marine Corps.
May 1978- December 1979 Naval Regional Medical Center, Okinawa, Japan.
November 1980- December 1981 3rd Medical Battalion, 3rd Fleet Service Support Group, 3rd Marine Division, Okinawa, Japan.
December 1981- May 1984 Naval Regional Clinic, Naval Air Station Kingsville, Texas.
Texas Army National Guard May 1984- May 1985 Served as Combat Medic
May 1984- May 1985 H&S Company 36th Armored Division.
Air Force Reserves June 1986- July 1988 Served as Aircrew Medical Evacuation Tech
June 1986-July 1988 69th Medical Evacuation Squadron.
Naval Reserves July 1988- July 1997 Served as Hospital Corpsman assigned to US Marine Corps Unit
June 1988-July 1997 H&S Company, 4th Amphibious Reconnaissance Battalion,4th Marine Division.
Army Reserves January 2005- January 2012 Served as an Army Nurse
January 2005-January 2012 5501st US Army Hospital.
Although I may have had a very extensive career, my appreciation is for those who served before me, with me, are presently serving and elect to serve in the future. My experience in the military is not all about the glory, the awards or the uniforms I had the honor to wear. It’s a responsibility each one of us as Americans have. Whether we serve in the military or support the military, we are all called on to protect our wonderful and unique country. My accomplishments in the military are not recorded in my mind but in my memories, good ones and bad. As we take the time to honor and recognize our veterans let us not forget the families of those veterans, the spouses, children and parents, for their sacrifice is much greater. They hand over their greatest loved one, a husband, wife, father, mother, son or daughter, to the call to duty. They hope and pray fora safe return home. I am a proud veteran, a proud American and a humble, faithful man.
Southwest General Hospital has been very supportive of my military career. Ready to allow me the time to serve when called to duty and to welcome my return. I am very proud of the opportunity that Southwest General gives my son ,Joseph, an RN and also 1st Lt, Nurse Corps US Army Reserves, and me to work together in the Emergency Department. I am very honored to have been selected for the 2017 Steward Chairman’s Award. I wore my military Dress Blues in honor of all veterans, especially our valuable Steward Veterans who are my fellow coworkers.
