Amy Now Climbs Mountains after Weight Loss Surgery

Even though Amy M. has lived in Carlisle, Pennsylvania since November 2016, she still feels a special connection to St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center and the Steward Center for Weight Control. Ten months before her move, the 28-year-old had gastric bypass surgery performed by bariatric surgeon Anthony McCluney, MD.

“I have struggled with my weight and tried diet after diet,” explains Amy. “Also, a lot of my family members had gastric bypass. I knew this was in my future and felt that life is short, so I decided not to wait.”

Leading up to her surgery Amy was at her highest weight − 257 pounds. She had high cholesterol, GERD, borderline pre diabetes, and was having infertility issues. She sought out medical help from Dr. McCluney.

“When I first met with Dr. McCluney I felt very supported and knew I was in good hands,” says Amy. “I had done a lot of research of what I wanted and he explained the differences between the different types of procedures and let me decide.”

Since her surgery, Amy has lost 100 pounds and her recent bloodwork came back perfect, which is the first time since she was 10 years old. She now goes to the gym and hikes a lot.

“Before my surgery, I hiked but couldn’t go as far,” she says. “I recently hiked three miles to the top of a mountain, which had beautiful views. I felt so accomplished.”

Her overall experience and the tools she learned at the Center for Weight Control will remain with Amy throughout her life. “

Everything went so well,” says Amy. “I would recommend the program to anyone interested in pursuing weight loss surgery.”
